It was about 7:30pm when the phone rang, and one of my long-time clients was on the line. 'Am I disturbing you?' he asked, 'absolutely not', I responded. As an independent insurance agent, there really aren't any working hours, and clients call and message me at any time of day. 'How are you?' I asked him, and he responded by telling me his wife was diagnosed with very advanced-stage cancer. I was in shock. It's something that always lurks in the back of your head, but when it happens it puts you into shock. After a few minutes I slowly regained my composure and started explaining that this is the reason why we paid for the private health insurance.
I realized that the person on the other end of the life was also very stressed, and tried being as calm as possible. I even suggested acupuncture or massage for stress relief – not something I wouldn't thought to recommend, but I heard from clients that it has helped them.
We agreed that I'd email them the policy terms, and that I'd meet with them to go over all the options and possibilities. After a few months, the woman need a medication that cost about 30K NIS monthly, and the insurance company immediately approved the order, with no problems.
In total, the couple received nearly one million NIS in returns from the private health insurance, covering diagnostic tests, laboratory tests, DNA sample analysis via the 'long-term care' annex, and most significantly – via coverage for drugs that aren't part of the healthcare basket.
I still feel happy when I remember that I didn't give up, and convinced them, despite their objections and many delays, to purchase private health insurance two years prior.
Stay safe and healthy!
